D3 build guide

The official MMC D3 manual as a web page: parts lists, design notes . Step-by-step assembly is in the interactive 3D PDF that comes with the files.

Before you start

The D3 was designed to give RC drift enthusiasts who like to build and modify their cars a high-performance chassis, balanced across every discipline of RC drift.

You can change the feel of the car drastically: the wheelbase goes from 240 mm to 273 mm, and the motor position moves the centre of gravity.

The front double wishbone suspension is simple but highly adjustable: track width, camber, caster, Ackerman and toe. The rear multi-link suspension adds grip and adjustment: track width, camber, caster, toe and several arm mounting positions.

The transmission is fully belt-driven for silent, smooth power to the rear wheels. The pulleys were reworked from a public-domain design by Katharsis on Printables.

Print settings

  • Use any PLA for the parts marked "3D (Color)". PLA+ gives them extra strength. The prototype used PLA-CF for the "3D (Carbon)" parts.
  • Print every part as flat as possible. Some parts may need supports.
  • Parts marked "1+1" are symmetrical pairs (two pieces in total). This only applies to the front and rear bulkheads.
  • The original deck needs a 260 × 260 mm bed to print flat. The current Cults3D listing adds a version for 220 mm beds.
  • Prioritise print quality and use at least 15 to 20% triangular infill.
  • Print every part in the printed parts lists below and get the shopping list ready before you start.
  • Each step builds one sub-assembly. Keep them aside until the final assembly, as the notes say.
  • The download includes an interactive 3D PDF of the chassis. Open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader to rotate and explode the model while you build.
  • Use the PDF if you prefer to build offline: MMC_D3_Chassis_Manual_V1.0.pdf.

You can

  • Print and use the parts for private use, in unlimited quantity.
  • Share photos of your prints on social networks or websites.

You can't

  • Commercial use or public sharing of the 3D model.
  • Modifying or adapting the model for public sharing or sale.
  • Distributing, selling, donating or exchanging the digital files.

55mm damper sets are recommended for this chassis. Turnbuckle lengths depend on the balljoints you use; check the standard arm lengths as reference.

Design notes

Rear suspension arm lengths

Distances are measured from the edge of the ball end caps. All of them are 10 mm as designed, but other sizes can be used.
